1) Become friends with the DBAs.

2) Use (and enforce) good naming standards from the beginning.

3) Don’t try to map every attribute (and association).
4) Let the database do the things it is good at.
5) Break up the database.
6) Watch out for triggers.

7) Shy away from tools to auto-generate your model.
8) Use NamedQueries where you can.

9) Manage Expectations.
10) Use rich domain modeling.
